Slot-canyon formation and Navajo Sandstone

Slot canyons form where water funnels into fractures and exploits weakness in bedrock. In the Antelope region, Navajo Sandstone — a geologic formation known for its thick, cross-bedded sands — provides a substrate that is susceptible to such focused erosion.
